Take the Short Cut to the Summit With Our Can-Am Shuttles

If you haven’t been to the summit of Bike Glendhu yet, you are truly missing out, but we get it. The climb up to Flacon’s Nest is gentle but it takes time, so you really need to be mentally prepared for a decent climb! The downhill is always a little bit sweeter when you’ve earned it but sometimes, it’s just not what you’re up for ( especially on those 28 degree summer days!).

The views from Falcon’s Nest are (we think) the best views over West Wānaka and we want everyone to be able to enjoy the fruits of our trail team’s labour which is why we have a handy little solution for those looking to get a short cut to the summit.

Introducing: The Can-Am Shuttles. This beaut gets you to the summit, and even just the ride itself is an adventure! Getting to the summit in our rugged rig is half of the fun. If you’ve been wondering what a summit shuttle is like, here’s everything you need to know before jumping in.

Shuttles can be booked for 2 or 3-hour trips

You can book a Can-Am shuttle for either a 2-hour trip or a 3-hour trip. The shuttle fits 5 people and their bikes. The number of trips you can squeeze into your allocated time will depend on what you want to ride and how quick you ride but in general, a 2-hour shuttle will get you one trip to Falcon’s Nest plus as many trips to Jack’s as you can fit in and a 3-hour trip will get you two summits to Falcons nest plus plenty of trips to Jack’s. Your driver will help you decide which trails will be best for your crew and help plan your route so rest assured, you’re in good hands.

Once your shuttles have finished, your trail pass for the day is still valid until closing time so if you’ve got it in the legs, you charge back up the mountain for extra laps.

Shuttles are a great way to get the most out of the mountain

With our summit shuttles, you don’t have to bike uphill at all. Not one climb. Not one hard pedal up. Okay, that may not be entirely true depending on the trails you ride but you get the point. Your driver will deliver you to your destination, you’ll be free to ride the downhill, and your driver will be there ready to give you lift back up when you’re ready. Win-win!

Our shuttles run in the mornings and afternoons so you’re free to enjoy the perks of Base 334 before or after your shuttle. Soak up the sun and indulge in a tasty (and healthy!) snack or cheeky post-ride beverage from Velo or run across the road for a quick dip in Lake Wānaka at Glendhu Bay. The options are endless but we promise you’ll have a ripper of a time.

Gear to bring

You can either bring your own bike or rent one of our top of the line Whyte Bikes from the onsite workshop. Helmets are required to be worn in the Can-Am (as well as on your bike!) so bring your helmet or grab one from rentals.

It’s always a good idea to bring a water bottle and if you’re prone to getting hungry, bring a snack too. The Can-Am takes you down the Motatapu road on a 4WD track before climbing up the mountain. Even on warm days the open-air Can-Am can be breezy and cool so bring an extra layer for the ride. Don’t worry, you can leave it with the driver while you ride down.

If you feel safer with full-face helmets, elbow pads and knee pads, by all means, bring those as well but we do not offer them in our rentals.

We can accommodate all levels of riders

The trail down from the summit is an intermediate trail and is best suited for mountain bikers who have experience with tight berms and fast flow track with some optional features. With that said, however, even if you’re not an intermediate rider and you’ve found yourself riding with some downhill frothers, we can help you out. Our shuttle drivers are well trained in how to customise a trip for all levels of mountain biker.

Price:

A 2-hour Can-Am summit shuttle costs $300 and can accommodate up to 5 passengers. If you can fill the shuttle, that’s only $60 each. Bargain.

A 3-hour Can-Am summit shuttle costs $450 (or $90/pp if you can fill the shuttle). This shuttle gets you two trips to the summit plus as many trips to Jack’s as you can squeeze in.

If you don’t have the crew to fill a full shuttle, don’t stress. We have Can-Am shuttles running from Jack’s Spot to Falcon’s Nest every half hour on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-2 pm. Bookings are required and you can book online here
